I am from Toronto, but now prefer smaller towns. I was raised a WASP, but don't hold many of those values any more, if I ever did. I am bisexual, yet have been in a 16 year monogamous relationship with a lovely man. We continue to learn how to communicate and support each other better. I identify as a left wing thinker. I lived off the grid, water access only for about 6 years. (I heated and cooked with wood, and had solar and wind power installed) I LOVE to dance, particularly to the Blues.

I moved to BC after a 2 week holiday in 1979. The mountains and the ocean remain a big draw for me. I've lived in Vancouver, Victoria, Duncan, Lund, Cortes Island, Courtenay, Comox and on a couple of rural farms, but feel like Cumberland is just right for me.

Fun facts about Alice

I am fascinated by cultures different than my own. I have gone from being a fan of fast travel to preferring slow travel. Last year we went to Morocco, (long on my bucket list), Cairo to see the pyramids, Botswana, (went on a safari), Norway to visit one of my husband's adult children, England, the home of my husband's birth, and Scotland where we went to the highlands as three sides of my ancestry were from there. Next year Vietnam in on the list. And lastly, I hate coffee and always have but I love many varieties of tea.

Why Alice joined

I am at the age where some of my friends are dying and some are moving on, in different directions, both of which have been disconcerting experiences. I like to have stimulating conversations, am by nature a curious person and wish to expand my friendship group.

I've lived in lots of different places including New Zealand, Vancouver, Seattle, the Midwest, France, and now Vancouver Island. Bowen Island is dear to me and a place that I have returned to throughout my life as a home base. New Zealand is very much a second home - the landscapes and culture deeply resonate with me and I'm always looking for an excuse to return.

What brought Emily here

When I returned to BC after living overseas in 2023, I felt unsettled and was seeking a place to put down roots. I went on a bike trip up the Sunshine Coast and down Vancouver Island to scout possible locations (and find the best bakeries en route!). A friend had recommended that I stop in Cumberland, and I immediately saw potential in the village and surrounds for the kind of lifestyle I enjoy. I visited several more times over the course of a year before I found a way to make the move in 2024. The longer I live here, the more I love it!

Fun facts about Emily

1. I've been a runner for most of my life - it's one of my greatest everyday joys and been an incredible source of community. I love exploring both new and familiar trails, and enjoying the scenic places my feet take me. 2. I spend a lot of my free time baking, and I love sharing the process and product with others! Baking with sourdough is my favourite, and I've been fortunate to bake in a variety of professional kitchens and learn from talented chefs. 3. I love learning languages even though I don't speak anything besides English fluently. While living in New Zealand, it was a privilege to take an immersive te reo Maori course (the indigenous language), which really strengthened my connection to the people and place.

I grew up in this area, Quadra Island, Campbell River, Comox and a short time in Whitehorse. My background is English, Irish, Scottish. I am traveling to Ireland in the first two weeks of July to attend a Hakomi Congress in Wicklow Ireland. My first time there. Being a native of the west coast has helped shape me in appreciating and loving the natural world, having access to one of the most beautiful places in the world. I feel very grateful to have access to this land and this community of those that respect farmers, the land and the natural world. I have also spent time in the city and appreciate what it has to offer.

I came to the Comox Valley at the time to assist my daughter with Downs Syndrome have programs that would support her life. We were living on Cortes and the services were limited. She has a great life here. My aging mother was also living here at the time and it gave me a opportunity to support her. Then when my 40 year marriage ended and my adult children moved here, it was certainly the place to stay.

Where Renee is from

I grew up in Calgary, Alberta, close to the Rocky Mountains, and much of my early life was shaped by time spent outdoors in places like Banff, Lake Louise, and Kananaskis. Being surrounded by big landscapes at a young age fostered both a sense of curiosity and a deep respect for the natural world. My background, however, is more layered than geography alone. Both of my parents were born in Indonesia in the 1930s during the Dutch colonial era—my mother of Dutch ancestry and my father of mixed Indonesian and Dutch heritage. Their early lives were profoundly shaped by war and the Japanese occupation during World War II. Eventually, both made their way to the Netherlands, where they later met on a skiing holiday in Austria. My older siblings were born in the Netherlands before my family immigrated to Canada in the 1970s, where I was later born in Calgary. I share this because my identity has never felt tied to one single place. The stories, displacement, resilience, and cultural complexity within my family shaped how I see the world from a young age. I grew up aware that people carry history with them, and that belonging can exist across cultures, landscapes, and generations. At 17, I spent two months ocean canoeing along the coast of British Columbia, an experience that profoundly influenced me and sparked a lifelong passion for wilderness travel, outdoor education, and guiding. Over time, Vancouver Island became home, where I have built much of my life and work as a teacher, outdoor educator, sea kayak guide, and facilitator. As I write this, I am currently in Indonesia seeking to better understand my ancestral story and reconnect with the landscapes and histories that shaped my family long before I was born. In many ways, that journey reflects a larger thread throughout my life: curiosity, exploration, and a desire to better understand both people and place.

What brought Renee here

I first moved up Vancouver Island from Victoria in 2011 to teach at Beachcombers Community School in Fanny Bay. At the time, I was looking for a lifestyle that felt more connected to nature, community, and a slower pace of living than what I had experienced in the city. In 2015, I eventually settled in the Comox Valley, specifically in Cumberland. What drew me here was the combination of small-town character, strong community culture, and immediate access to the forest and outdoors. It felt like a place where creativity, adventure, and connection to the natural world were woven into daily life. As someone whose work and identity are deeply connected to outdoor education, guiding, and wellbeing, the Valley offered an environment where those values could genuinely be lived rather than simply talked about. Over time, it became more than just a place to live—it became home, community, and a base from which I could build meaningful work and relationships.

At 17, I spent two months ocean canoeing along the coast of British Columbia. 56-days to be exact. I auditioned for Canadian Idol. I am an empath and carry my heart on my sleeve. I love with all my heart and believe ...or rather am deeply curious about ancestry & spirituality.

I grew up in the Cariboo, have lived in Fort St. John, a few different places in Alberta, and lived in Hope for a few years before moving to the island.

What brought Naomi here

My sister and her partner had moved to the valley, then a couple of years later my dad moved here. I had a life change, and wanted to be closer to family, so moved to the valley in late 2017. I love being close to the ocean, that we are surrounded by mountains and forests. I also love the mild winters after spending quite a few in colder climates. I also don't mind the rain, which I know some people can get sick of.

I have been working hard to establish my career, and also have been working through university all while being a single parent. I have finally finished university and my daughter is becoming more independent. I have had a narrow focus for many years, now it is time to enjoy meeting new people and having new experiences. Where Alex is from

I was born in England to a British mother and Canadian father, though we moved to White Rock, BC when I was three - so I'm Canadian in every way that counts. White Rock is a quiet little peninsula suburb south of Surrey, at that time in the early 2000's it felt tucked away from the rest of the mainland and was a perfect place to grow up. That said, my mum made sure the British influence never fully left. The dry humour, the appreciation for European culture, a healthy obsession for a good packet of crisps (bag of chips) - all might have been an influence on how I ended up with a German wife!

What brought Alex here

I moved to the Comox Valley in 2021 with my then-girlfriend, now wife, and dog from Victoria. I'd been in Victoria since 2013 when I moved there for university. I fell in love with the island and the city itself - how accessible everything was, the charm of the downtown area, and the beautiful nature and scenery. However I found during the pandemic that the things I previously appreciated began to fade, and with the massive influx of people moving to the city it became increasingly difficult to get out into nature, which is something I really value. Add to that the high cost of living and the housing situation and my wife and I were looking to make a move. At that time I was still working in person and it didn't feel it was possible, but fate landed me a remote job and shortly after we made the decision to move up here and haven't looked back since!

Fun facts about Alex

1. In my early twenties I traveled extensively through Europe and Southeast Asia. I made a habit of doing a handstand in every location I visited - a skill left over from years of gymnastics and springboard diving growing up. 2. I became a dad six months ago to my son Noah - this has probably been the biggest and most meaningful experience of my life so far. 3. I co-facilitate a weekly men's circle here in the Valley. I'd been part of the wider organization for a few years before splitting off to start my own group about a year ago. It's a space where a group of men show up, practice being honest, share what's actually going on, and hold each other accountable. It's become one of the most valuable things in my life and a major positive impact.

The tagline on the Facebook post really stood out to me: there's so many interesting people in this valley, yet I feel like I've only scratched the surface in meeting them. Working remotely is great in a lot of ways, but I find myself really missing the in person aspect. I don't have coworkers to grab lunch with or catch up with at the coffee machine. This felt like a good way to do something about it - meet people I'd never otherwise cross paths with, and fill my social cup.

I was born and lived most of my life in Alberta but after a year of solo (well with my rescue dog) travel, I settled in the Comox Valley and am very glad I found my place here.

I love that the valley picked me for my place to call home. It has everything I want, beaches, forests, mountains and all the nature needed. It also has great people and community.

I helped build and own a strawbale house in the foothills of the Rockies. I spend a year camping and travelling with my rescue dog, including 2 months in Baja, Mexico, after having my heart broken. And I love learning, especially about learning, and how human do and don't learn.

born in AB. moved to Peru as a child w sister and teacher parents. we also lived in Ft Nelson, Little Buffalo, Shuswap, Three Hills, Elnora. my parents and gran inspired and shaped me. mid 80s, in my late teens, i spent a pivotal 4 months in the Philippines. then 5 summers in California involved in youth programs for inner city kids. i was a Katimavik Project Leader. I spent 7 weeks in Ghana on a UofC field study trip - studying the "psychology of death and dying". i have a 2yr diploma in holistic nutrition. so many wonderful humans along the way have left their impressions on my life.

found a job and came to be near extended family... as a 4yr old child, we spent the summer on Quadra. I'd spent time here in the Valley in high school as well as the late 80s.

I grew up on a farm near Edmonton AB. Mom of 3 children while running my own business. Sold my business and I am presently working part time as a stylist at Level 10 Eurospa in Courtenay.

What brought Sylvia here

From the first time I set foot on Vancouver Island I knew I wanted to live here. It took me 20 years to purchase a home in Cumberland and another 10 years to move here. I have never looked back and feel very grateful I get to live here.

Fun facts about Sylvia

I am presently taking a course on increasing my intuition. Love to travel and take one overseas trip every year to explore a new culture. Very curious about mysteries that science has no explanation for.

Where Carly is from

I grew up in Whistler BC, an amazing place in the 80’s and 90’s to grow up. After, I moved around BC living in many different communities raising my kids. I came to the island in 2008.

What brought Carly here

I was living in Nanaimo with my 3 children and got an amazing job offer up here. I decided it was worth the move and I am so glad I did. I can’t imagine living anywhere else now. Where else can you downhill ski and kayak in the same day?!?!

Fun facts about Carly

Terrified of spiders. I can find beauty in anything and have been told I am crazy optimistic. I hate stepping out of my comfort zone, but when I do I find the most magical moments.

Where Ali is from

Family home is on Bowen Island. Canadian born - grew up in UK, NZ, US, then back to Canada for higher education. Recent adult life has been spent between NZ and BC (both places are home in different ways!)

What brought Ali here

I knew from university/grad school days that I loved the island - and Tofino is my happy place - my sister discovered the Valley when she was scouting places for us to put down some roots/pursue our bigger vision - and the longer we're here, the more we love it! From our time spent in NZ we knew we liked being somewhere smaller - and the access to the outdoors is huge.

Fun facts about Ali

I started a book club in May 2019 and as of this weekend, it's been going for 7 years - I've lived in multiple countries and had many different adventures during this time but never missed a meeting! We have people call in from multiple countries and time zones. I've always loved international major sporting events - I finished my undergrad a semester early so I could volunteer at the Vancouver Olympics, and the summer of that year made it to South Africa for the FIFA World Cup. My dog Tui is named after a native NZ bird - for me, buying a house was a means to an end (fenced yard) so I could get a dog in my life again!

My dog lives in a musical just for her. I sing to her and make up songs for her daily. It makes me laugh and smile! I’m loving learning to garden and grow my own food. I’m a morning person who loves the quiet at the start of the day and sitting on my patio and watching the day get started.

Where Nina is from

I moved from the mainland. I have lived in a few different areas, including NZ. I was born in White Rock and I have always loved the outdoors and adventure. The lower mainland felt like it lost its sense of community. I was introduced once to Cumberland and that was that...moved over 4 years later.

What brought Nina here

My first visit in Cumberland! Loved the mountain biking trails and the small town with only one main street! The closeness to all the outdoors, the forest has always been a priority for me.

Fun facts about Nina

I used to have a cute pet snake, Goldilocks, sadly, she got loose that one last time, in Comox! I have a second degree black belt in Shotokan Karate and first degree in Kobudo (Japanese traditional fighting weapons). I have a very healthy respect/fear of big water, big snow, big air!
